The LOSSAN rail corridor stretches 351 miles from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, with the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, freight, commuter, and long-distance trains sharing the tracks and certain stations. Ongoing construction projects keep the infrastructure in top condition and contribute to overall improvements in rail travel along the corridor. Larger projects require tracks or stations to be closed so crews can perform necessary work, which can temporarily affect train service.

For Travel Between December 26 to 29

Los Angeles Union Station (LAX) will close for track and signal upgrades from December 26 to December 29, 2023. To provide continuous service to passengers traveling past LAX, the Pacific Surfliner will take an alternative route along the east bank of the Los Angeles River and through part of the Alameda Corridor during this period. Expect modifications to the train schedule, with no stops at LAX. Travelers going through LAX won't experience disruptions as the train will bypass the station.

Passengers traveling to or from LAX, can utilize bus connections from either Glendale or Fullerton, depending on the specific train they are traveling on. Bus seats are limited, so book now to guarantee your seat.

Reservations Required on Pacific Surfliner trains for those traveling to or from LA Union Station:
Tuesday, December 26 – Friday, December 29

The service updates are outlined below:

For all 700 series trains:
- Shuttle bus connections will be provided to and from LA Union Station from the Glendale Station.
For 500 series trains:
- Shuttle bus connections will be provided to and from LA Union Station from the Fullerton Station for trains 562, 564, 572, 586, 573, 581, 589, and 595.
- Trains 580 and 591 will be temporarily suspended.
- Train 587 will be temporarily suspended and replaced by a special train 589, operating one hour later.

Reservations

During the reservation period, all passengers traveling to and from LAX, must ride the bus they are ticketed for. If travel plans change, make adjustments to the reservation in advance of the scheduled departure. This can be done online at Amtrak.com (select “Modify Trip”), by phone at 800-USA-RAIL, or at a staffed Amtrak station. If you have an Amtrak monthly pass or a multi-ride pass, please use Amtrak’s RideReserve system to enter trip details in advance. This will guarantee a space onboard the bus you plan to take. Passengers without a reservation may be turned away if the buses become full.

Rail to Rail and Codeshare programs are suspended to and from LAX but will continue as normal to all other stations.

Passengers should be aware of these changes and plan accordingly for the specified period.

BAGGAGE SERVICE SUSPENDED

Funding limitations caused by extended track closures which were in place for an extended period have made it necessary to make temporary adjustments to the Pacific Surfliner service. We are doing all we can to preserve vital intercounty transportation connections and provide a travel experience that our passengers will enjoy.

The adjustments below are effective until further notice.

Checked baggage is not currently available on Pacific Surfliner trains. Luggage may still be carried and stored on board. You may bring two personal items that measure up to 14” x 11” x 7” each, and weigh up to 25 pounds each. You may also bring two carry-on bags that measure up to 28" x 22" x 11" each, and weigh up to 50 pounds each.

Pacific Surfliner trains continue to serve all stations according to the schedules. However, ticket windows are currently closed at the following stations:

Solana Beach: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
Oceanside: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
San Juan Capistrano: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Santa Ana: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Irvine: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Anaheim: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton

FAQs

Purchase tickets using the online booking tool (Book Now button at the top of the page), the Amtrak app, or by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL. Irvine, Santa Ana, and Anaheim also have self-serve ticket kiosks (located inside the station building) where passengers can make new reservations, adjust existing reservations, or print out tickets.

Passengers without a smartphone or access to a ticket kiosk may call 1-800-USA-Rail to purchase a ticket. The Amtrak agent can provide a confirmation code once a trip is booked. That code can be given to the conductor on board in lieu of a printed or electronic ticket.
Unreserved Coach tickets can be saved and used at a later date (up to one year from the date listed on the ticket) without making any changes to the reservation. Some restrictions may apply, such as when the trains are all-reserved on peak travel days.

Business Class reservations do need to be updated if plans change. If you made your reservation online, visit Amtrak.com and select “Modify Trip”. Log into your Amtrak Guest Rewards account or enter your reservation number and email address to make changes to your trip. You can also call 800-USA-RAIL in advance of your ticketed departure.

Pacific Surfliner tickets are considered "Flexible Fares". Tickets can be cancelled with a full refund to original form of payment with no fees if canceled before departure. There are no change fees. You can get more details on cancellation policies on Amtrak.com.

You can also check train status on Amtrak.com (Train Status button / clock icon at the top of the page) or the Amtrak app, or the Track Your Train Map. If your train is delayed and you are still waiting at the station, you can look for updates via electronic signage.
